How do you choose the birth control method that suits you best? Several factors can influence this. For example, breastfeeding or want to get pregnant again soon.
Any form of contraception can be prescribed. We are also specialized in placing an IUD. After placing an IUD, we immediately make a control ultrasound. This way you immediately know whether it is placed correctly!
Feel free to contact us or make an appointment at the contraception consultation hour and we will see together which contraception method is best for you.
There are many different types of birth control pills with different types of hormones. Two types can be distinguished:
The combined pill: this contains both estrogens and progestogens. For example Microgynon®
The mini pill: this contains only progestin. For example Cerazette®
The hormone estrogen ensures that you have a predictable period. Progestin ensures that you do not become pregnant. You should not use the combination pill if you are breastfeeding. The hormone estrogen has a negative influence on your milk production and on the composition of breast milk. You can use the mini pill, without estrogens, during the breastfeeding period. So this pill is also often used by women who have just given birth and are breastfeeding.
You should take the pill at about the same time each day, in the order shown on the strip. Most combination pills contain 21 pills per strip. You take this for 3 weeks and then you have a quit week. You will have your period during the stop week. You are also protected against pregnancy during the stop week. With the combination pill you can skip or postpone the stop week, and therefore your period, by continuing directly to the next strip.
The progestin-only pill contains 28 pills per strip and does not contain a quit week. So you go straight to the next strip. Because all 28 pills contain active substances, you cannot predict, shift or skip your period.

Is it wise to take the pill at a fixed time every day? This minimizes the chance of forgetting the pill.

The copper IUD, for example, T-Safe® contains no hormones and is therefore suitable if you are not allowed or do not want to use hormones. It is a T- or horseshoe-shaped piece of plastic with a copper wire around it. The active substance in this IUD is copper. This is released gradually and makes the sperm cells inactive. No monthly fertilization takes place and the copper IUD provides pregnancy protection for up to 10 years.
The copper IUD can also be used as a morning after spiral if it is placed within 5 days of unsafe sex. This means that any fertilized egg cannot implant sight in the uterine wall, so you will not get pregnant.
Since the copper IUD does not contain hormones, you keep your own menstrual pattern.
Placement of a spiral
Echo Eindhoven is specialized in placing spirals. So you can contact us for placing all spirals. You do not need a referral for this.
If you have never given birth, we prefer to place the IUD during a menstrual period because your cervix is slightly open. This facilitates insertion of the spiral. We are also sure that there is no pregnancy at that time. After delivery, we placed the IUD 10 to 12 weeks after delivery.
Before placing the spiral, an ultrasound is first made to determine the position of your uterus and to see if there is no pregnancy. Then the spiral is placed, this only takes a few minutes. Afterwards an ultrasound is made again to see if the spiral is in the right place in the uterus.
Side effects
You may experience abdominal pain or cramping immediately after inserting the IUD. This is usually short-lived.
Since the copper IUD is a method without hormones, you keep your own menstrual pattern. However, the first and sometimes the second menstruation may come a little earlier than usual and be a little more painful or last longer. After 2 or 3 months, your menstrual pattern should be the same as your natural menstrual pattern again.
Reliability after installation
After placing a copper spiral you are immediately protected against a pregnancy. You do not need to use additional contraception.
Removal of a spiral
You can also go to Echo Eindhoven for removing a spiral. You can have a spiral removed at any time. After removal you are immediately fertile again. If the spiral is finished and would like to have a new one installed, this is possible.

The IUD is also called Intra-Uterine Device? This literally means “object in the womb”.
